Why Adopt Heartwood?
...To show you care.
What is your school doing to counteract violence in school, in the news, in the media? Adopting ethics education is proactive and preventive—unlike metal detectors, which deal with symptoms instead of causes. The most fundamental reason to adopt Heartwood is that we have to do something to show children another way—we have no choice!

...To keep it simple.
Heartwood was created by teachers for teachers, with respect for how much they are already doing. It is easy to use and infuse into language arts and other areas of the curriculum, helping teachers meet standards instead of adding to their burdens. The Heartwood attributes provide a simple, positive way for teachers to relate to children, correct behavior, and improve classroom climate.

...To teach children moral literacy.
Heartwood is based on seven universal ethical values: Courage, Loyalty, Justice, Respect, Hope, Honesty, and Love. Evaluation research shows that children understand and recognize these seven attributes after only one year of classroom use. They can use this basic ethical language in discussions, in writing, in making decisions, and in solving conflicts.

...To touch their hearts.
Stories are an age-old way to nurture children, reach them on an emotional level, and teach important life lessons. Beautiful literature forms the foundation of every Heartwood lesson, supporting literacy and exposing children to the wider world and its rich cultural heritage. Our book selection process ensures that each kit is inclusive, gender balanced, and multicultural.

...To connect with children.
A caring classroom results from building relationships between students and teachers, but that’s not always easy. In the discussions following Heartwood stories, teachers and children discuss what really matters, such as how they have shown courage or honesty in their lives. Many of the activities also encourage meaningful interactions with families and communities.
